Welcome to Summer!

The season of sunshine, splash zones, and sniff-filled walks is finally here! Whether your pup is a backyard zoomie champion or a mountain trail explorer, this summer is bursting with opportunities for bonding, enrichment, and—yes—some very good naps in the shade.

Let’s dive into safe summer fun, cooling tips, activity ideas, and what’s ahead next month to help you and your dog enjoy every golden moment together.

Safety First: Beat the Heat

Hot weather can be rough on our furry friends. Stay cool with these essentials:

  • Walk during cooler hours: Early mornings and evenings are best.

  • Check pavement temp: If it’s too hot for your hand for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for paws.

  • Hydrate often: Bring fresh water and a portable bowl.

  • Offer shade and rest, especially for older dogs or those with thick coats.

Try This: Freeze low-sodium broth with blueberries and carrot slices for a hydrating treat.

Summer Activity Roundup

  • Beach Days

  • Choose dog-friendly beaches, bring shade and water, and rinse off saltwater after playtime.

  • Trail Sniffing Adventures

  • Let your dog explore a new trail and follow their nose—it’s great mental stimulation!

  • Only allow off-leash walking if you’re dog is 100% reliable on coming when called.

  • Remember, if you wouldn’t drink the water, don’t let your dog.

  • Park Picnics

  • Pack a dog-safe snack like seedless watermelon, bring a blanket, and relax under a tree.

  • Backyard Camping

  • Pitch a tent, bring some toys, and stargaze together—no travel required.

Fireworks & Anxious Dogs

Loud booms can be scary. Here’s how to help your dog cope:

  • Create a cozy, safe space at home with blankets and favorite toys.

  • Try calming options like white noise, Thundershirts, or vet-recommended supplements.

  • DogTV is an excellent soothing background noise.

  • Walk early in the day and double-check ID tags and microchips.

  • Let your dog stay home while you enjoy fireworks.

  • A frozen chew toy can be soothing during noisy evenings.
