First Aid Kit

Your Dog First Aid Kit should include these items:

  1.  Gauze, sterile pads, and vet wrap - a self clinging elastic wrap - all can be used to wrap a wound prior to going to the vet.

  2. Scissors.

  3. Styptic pencil or powder to stop a nail from bleeding when it's been cut too close (I prefer the powder)

  4. Tweezers or forceps to remove splinters, ticks, etc.

  5. Triple antibiotic ointment to inhibit bacteria growth - spray is good too.

  6. antiseptic to help prevent infection of minor cuts and wounds.

  7. Hydro-cortisone cream to reduce itching caused by bug bites.

  8. Diphenhydramine - an antihistamine for allergic reactions.

  9. Cold pack to reduce swelling.

  10. Eyewash to rinse objects out of the eye.

  11. Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) to induce vomiting in the event of poisoning - ALWAYS check with the vet or poison control before administering, it can worsen some situations.

  12. oral dosing syringe or turkey baster - for administering hydrogen peroxide

  13. teaspoon set for measuring hydrogen peroxide

  14. liquid hand washing soap

  15. Antiseptic wipes - to clean a cut/wound.

  16. Alcohol prep pads - to clean scissors and tweezers before use.

  17. Muzzle - a scared or injured dog may even bite a loved one.

  18. Latex gloves.

  19. corn syrup for raising blood sugar quickly

  20. electrolyte beverage

  21. A list of emergency phone numbers, your vet, the emergency middle of the night vet, poison control. Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680

Most of these items you'll have on hand for your "human" emergency list - simply keep this list as a resource with your other supplies. I'm assuming you'll probably need to add the muzzle :-)
